Saline County, Arkansas
1909 – The current building of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Benton’s historic Gravel Hill community was dedicated on September 25, 1909. St. Paul was founded soon after Pleasant Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church, which had been established by some of Gravel Hill’s earliest families. The church remains an important part of the history of Benton’s historic African-American community. – Read more at this link
1945 – Dr. William T. Gann, one of Benton’s longtime physicians, died on September 25, 1945, at age 82. Gann practiced medicine in Benton for decades and treated patients connected with local industries and railroads. His former home and medical office survives today as the Gann Museum, one of Benton’s best-known historic landmarks. – Read more at this link

Arkansas
1957 – On September 25, the Little Rock Nine entered Central High School under federal troop escort for their first full day of classes. President Dwight D. Eisenhower had ordered federal troops into Little Rock after violence surrounding attempts to integrate the school. The 101st Airborne Division surrounded the school as the nine students entered. – Read more at this link

1789 – On September 25, the First Congress proposed twelve amendments to the U.S. Constitution and sent them to the states for ratification. Ten of those amendments were eventually ratified and became the Bill of Rights, which was ratified on December 15, 1791. – Read more at this link
1897 – William Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi. The future Nobel Prize-winning author became one of the most influential writers of the American South, creating the fictional Yoknapatawpha County as the setting for many of his stories and novels. – Read more at this link
World
1493 – Christopher Columbus departed Spain on September 25 for his second voyage to the Americas. This expedition was much larger than his first and included seventeen ships, marking the beginning of Spain’s effort to establish permanent settlements in the Caribbean. – Read more at this link
