Saline County, Arkansas
2012 – The Charles “Bullet” Dean Hyten House at 211 South Main Street in Benton is added to the National Register of Historic Places. Hyten was an important figure in Benton’s Niloak Pottery industry, and the house represents an important part of the community’s pottery heritage. – Read more at this link

Arkansas
1863 – Union troops complete an expedition from Helena to Clarendon and return to their base. The operation was part of the Union military effort to control the Arkansas Delta and establish secure routes following the Federal capture of Little Rock. – Read more at this link
1885 – Naturalist and University of Arkansas professor William J. Baerg is born. Baerg became a prominent entomologist and naturalist, spending decades studying Arkansas wildlife and teaching at the University of Arkansas. His research included black widow spiders, tarantulas and scorpions. – Read more at this link
1949 – Arkansas civil-rights activist Ralph Robert “Bobby” Loyd is born. He later became an advocate for LGBTQ rights in Arkansas, helped establish Conway’s Pride Parade and became a plaintiff in a federal challenge to Arkansas’s ban on same-sex marriage. – Read more at this link
1957 – President Dwight D. Eisenhower orders federal troops into Little Rock during the Central High School desegregation crisis. He also federalizes the Arkansas National Guard, setting the stage for the Little Rock Nine to enter Central High under federal military protection the following morning. – Read more at this link
2005 – The remnants of Hurricane Rita produce 17 tornadoes across Arkansas. The tornado outbreak stretched across the state, with several storms producing unusually long tracks. – Read more at this link
2007 – The new visitor center at Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site is dedicated during the 50th-anniversary commemorations of the Central High desegregation crisis. Members of the Little Rock Nine participated in the events. – Read more at this link
United States
1789 – President George Washington signs the Judiciary Act of 1789, establishing the federal judicial system and creating the office of United States Marshal. The law helped establish the basic structure of the federal courts that still exists today. – Read more at this link
1825 – Frances Ellen Watkins Harper is born in Baltimore. She became an influential African American poet, writer, lecturer and activist whose work addressed abolition, women’s rights, voting rights and racial equality. – Read more at this link
1869 – “Black Friday” sends Wall Street into a financial panic after the collapse of an attempt by financiers Jay Gould and James Fisk to corner the U.S. gold market. The resulting plunge in gold prices caused major financial losses and market turmoil. – Read more at this link
1896 – F. Scott Fitzgerald is born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He would become one of the most prominent American writers of the Jazz Age, best known for novels including The Great Gatsby. – Read more at this link
1960 – The USS Enterprise is launched at Newport News, Virginia. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was the first of its kind and would go on to become one of the most famous ships in U.S. Navy history. – Read more at this link

622 – Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijra, becomes the event used to mark the beginning of the Islamic calendar. The migration was a foundational event in the development of Islam and the early Muslim community. – Read more at this link
1948 – Soichiro Honda establishes Honda Motor Co. in Japan. The company initially focused on small engines and motorcycles before growing into one of the world’s largest automobile and motorcycle manufacturers. – Read more at this link
1973 – Guinea-Bissau declares independence from Portugal after years of armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule. Portugal formally recognized the country’s independence the following year. – Read more at this link
1996 – The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty opens for signatures at the United Nations. The treaty seeks to prohibit all nuclear explosions, although it has not entered into force because several required countries have not ratified it. – Read more at this link
