Norman “Russell” Caldwell
Norman “Russell” Caldwell entered his heavenly home on Saturday, June 27, 2026, surrounded by the family he cherished more than anything. He was born on June 10, 1946, in Benton, Arkansas, to Richie Lee and Mary Katherin Caldwell. The life he lived was a testament to his faith, his love for his family, and his commitment to serving others.
Russell graduated from high school before entering the United States Air Force at the age of 19, where he proudly served his country and attained the rank of Sergeant. He then served the citizens of Saline County for 14 years with the Sheriff’s Office, where he was a trusted coworker and a tremendous asset to the department, while also volunteering with the Salem Fire Department for 17 years, always willing to serve wherever he was needed. He retired from Alcoa after a dedicated career in the lab as an analyst, having also spent time working in the mines.
A longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Russell was a faithful member of Forest Hills Missionary Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 60 years and served as a deacon for 55 years. The week before his passing, he was still preparing the next Sunday School lesson, “just in case.” His faith wasn’t something he simply talked about, it was something he lived every day.
For nearly 61 years, Russell shared a beautiful marriage with the love of his life, Delorse Mask Caldwell. Their marriage was built on faith, commitment, and a deep love for one another. He took great joy in caring for Delorse and always tried to put her needs before his own.
To know Russell was to love him. He had the biggest heart and loved his family with all of it. They meant everything to him, and it showed in the way he cared for them and the way he lived his life. Even during his illness, his concern was always for others. He enjoyed reading, spending time with family, and was always ready with a joke or story that would leave everyone smiling.
One of his family’s favorite memories was hearing him play “Blue Christmas” sung by Porky Pig during Christmas. He laughed just as hard every year, and before long everyone else was laughing with him. It wasn’t just the song they will remember, but the joy he found in sharing it.
Russell was also blessed with a church family that loved him dearly. Many lovingly knew him as “Paw” or “Pops,” a reflection of the kindness, patience, and encouragement he freely gave to others.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of nearly 61 years, Delorse Mask Caldwell; his daughters, LeAnn (Kevin) Chadwick and Lana (Greg) Brown; his grandson, Luke (Miriam) Ward; his sister, LaNell (Ken) McCuen; bonus grandchildren, Zane and Bethaney Simpson; along with many extended family members, church family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Gentiva Hospice for the compassion, support, and care they provided for Russell.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Smith-Benton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by him being laid to rest at Rosemont Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Russell’s memory to the American Heart Association, the American Kidney Fund, or Hope Fur Paws Rescue.
Russell’s life was one of quiet faith, humble service, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
