Carl Hugh Lawhon, Jr. peacefully left his earthly home on Wednesday, June 11, 2026, while holding the hand of his beloved wife of 53 years and the love of his life, Mary Glenn Lawhon.
Hugh was born on November 4, 1950, in Helena, Arkansas, to Carl Hugh Lawhon, Sr. and Freddie Mae Crippen Lawhon, who preceded him in death, along with his brother Fred Lawhon. During his childhood, his family lived in West Helena, Poyen, and Tucson, Arizona, before eventually settling in Glen Rose, where they owned and operated the Lawhon Grocery Store. Those early years instilled in him a strong work ethic, a deep appreciation for family, and the down-to-earth values that would define his life.
After high school, Hugh proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving much of his time stationed in Guam. Shortly after returning home, he met the beautiful Mary Glenn while cruising Military Road in Benton with friends. What began as a chance encounter grew into a lifelong love story. They were married on March 16, 1973, and together built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their greatest joy came with the long-awaited arrival of their daughter, Chloe Elizabeth, who completed their family.
Hugh inherited from his father not only his name but also his quick wit, infectious sense of humor, deep love for family, and remarkable ability to make anyone laugh. He treasured the time spent with his younger brother, Fred, whether playing a round of golf, gathering with siblings around the old picnic table beneath the trees at their parents’ home, or engaging in the good-natured holiday debate over who would get to claim the serving platter as their dinner plate. Those moments became cherished family traditions and lasting memories.
A faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Benton, Hugh believed in serving others. He devoted countless hours to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, both on the Tuesday crew and at the Habitat ReStore, and serving at the Christian Community Care Clinic. While he often jokingly referred to his service as being “voluntold,” those who knew him understood that he found joy in helping others. Most of all, he was always willing to accompany and assist Mary wherever life took her, happily volunteering to be by her side in everything she did.
Hugh leaves his wife Mary Glenn Lawhon, his daughter Chloe (Benny) Fratesi, his sisters Janice (Glenn) Haddox, Laura Kirby, Pat (Denny) Dyer, his brother-in-law David (Karen) Glenn, sisters-in-law Susan Williamson, Diann Lawhon and a host of nieces and nephews to cherish his memory and the wonderful times they shared throughout his life.
