The incident report from Benton Police Department states that a resident found a man in his home, sitting in the bedroom of his two children. When the resident confronted the stranger, the children awoke. They were told to get their mom, and as the kids left, the stranger charged the resident. What happened next may explain the bruising on the detainee’s face in his mugshot.

On 4/28/2025, around 1:15 AM, I responded to a residence in reference to a burglary in progress. Prior to my arrival on scene, dispatch informed me that the caller, had stated there was an unknown male inside of his residence. Additionally, they informed me that the resident and the unknown male were in a physical altercation with one another.
As I arrived on scene, I observed the male, later identified as Raymond Lafferty, laying on the floor in the living room of the above-mentioned residence. Ofc. Stroud and Ofc. Iaboni placed Lafferty in handcuffs and walked him outside of the residence.
While speaking to Lafferty, there was blood coming from his mouth and nose. I requested Pafford respond to the scene to conduct a medical evaluation on Lafferty. After Lafferty was cleared by Pafford, I transported him to the Saline County Jail.
While at the jail, I was informed that Lafferty would need to be cleared at Saline Memorial Hospital before being booked into the jail. I then transported him to Saline Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.
While at the hospital, Ofc. Iaboni began asking Lafferty questions about this incident. Lafferty informed Ofc. Iaboni and I that he had initially walked in the house and back out several times prior to getting confronted by the resident.
Lafferty then stated that as he entered into the house for the last time, he walked into the first bedroom with two children sleeping. Upon entering the bedroom, Lafferty stated that he sat down and watched the two children sleeping. He then stated that after this, the resident, whom Lafferty referred to as “The man in the house” confronted him and asked him why he was in the house. After he informed me of this, he did not provide us with any more information regarding the incident.
While I was dealing with Lafferty, Ofc. Stroud stayed on scene and spoke to the resident and the rest of his family. See Ofc. Stroud’s supplement for conversation details. The resident completed a witness statement form.
Lafferty’s witness statement form corroborated with Lafferty’s statement that he provided me at the hospital. The resident’s witness statement form states that he confronted Lafferty in his kid’s bedroom and asked him what he was doing, to which Lafferty replied that he was watching them. The statement form then mentioned that the resident told his children to get their mother to call the police, which is when Lafferty charged at him inside of the residence.
The resident’s statement then reads that as he was charged by Lafferty, he defended himself by hitting him until he fell onto the floor. Lafferty was later cleared by medical staff and transported back to the Saline County Jail where he was charged with Residential Burglary (5-39-201 B/F) and Assault 3rd Degree (5-17-207 C/M). The witness statement form provided by the resident has been placed into records to be attached to this report.
