Lewis served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1967. He later served and retired a senior master sergeant from the U.S. Air National Guard. He was a depot agent and wire chief for the Rock Island Railroad. Afterwards, he worked for the VA Medical Center and retired as the supervisor plumber pipe fitter. He was a member of the Benton First United Methodist Church, the Rock Island Booster Club, the Scottish Rite, and a Freemason of Lodge No. 574.

Lewis was always ready to get to it. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, and reading. He believed if he could fix it without hiring someone else, he ought to give it his best effort. (Almost) every time, he pulled it off. He believed in giving back to the community and volunteered with CJCHON of Benton. Above all, he loved having family and friends around and will be dearly missed.
