Upon making contact with the driver, later identified as Carpenter, the officer reported that he appeared confused and unsteady on his feet, with a strong odor of alcohol present. According to the report, Carpenter admitted to drinking “a couple of beers” but declined to participate in all four standardized field sobriety tests, including the horizontal gaze nystagmus, walk and turn, one leg stand, and a preliminary breath test.
Carpenter was taken into custody and transported to the Saline County Detention Center. There, he submitted to a breath test, which indicated a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.22, nearly three times the legal limit in Arkansas.
Three firearms were found during an inventory of Carpenter’s vehicle, which was towed and impounded. The weapons were later released to Carpenter’s wife.
Carpenter was cited for DWI, first offense, and driving left of center. Bryant Police Department officials confirmed that Carpenter was terminated from his position on Wednesday, one day after the arrest.
