The Benton City Council will consider multiple grant applications, property tax levies, and rezoning ordinances during its upcoming regular meeting on Monday, June 22, 2026. The evening will begin with a 5:30 p.m. agenda session at Benton City Hall, followed immediately by the formal council meeting.
Mayor Tom Farmer will call the meeting to order at 410 River Street, with the invocation led by the Rev. Jay Bruno and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Council Member Hamm.
Grants & Budget Amendments
The Finance Committee will present several items, including Resolution No. 27 of 2026. This measure accepts a $16,000 Certified Local Government Grant amendment from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, approves a contract with ELOS up to $25,000, and adjusts the 2026 general fund budget to reflect the new revenue and expenditure appropriations.
Additionally, council members will vote on measures authorizing applications for external funding. Resolution No. 28 seeks approval to apply for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program on behalf of the mayor and police chief.
Resolutions No. 30 and No. 31 will authorize the city and the Benton Public Utilities Commission to apply for federal grant funding through the Arkansas Hazard Mitigation Grant Program for street, drainage, and utility improvements.
Public Safety & Municipal Taxes
The council will consider a formal agreement with the Saline County Career Technical Campus under Resolution No. 29. The contract would place one school resource officer at the campus for the 2026-2027 school year.
The finance agenda also includes Ordinance No. 34, which would levy ad valorem taxes on real and personal property within Benton. The proposed property taxes will support general municipal operations as well as the Fireman’s Pension and Relief Fund.
Zoning & Land Use Changes
The Planning Commission will present three separate property development ordinances.
Ordinance No. 35 proposes rezoning a parcel from an R-2 single-family district to an HI heavy industrial classification.
Ordinance No. 36, seeks a conditional use permit to allow an accessory building for business storage at 221 Clark Street.
Ordinance No. 37 would change a parcel’s designation from an R-2 single-family district down to an R-1 single-family district, amending the city’s official zoning map.
The meeting will conclude with committee reports, old business, and a period dedicated to public comments before adjournment.
