Raised in Avilla, AR, Mildred learned early that love often looks like steady work. Before school, she fed and milked the cows one small part of life on a working farm. Her husband Marion was in the Navy, and she followed him to posts in Oklahoma, California, and Hawaii. When he retired, the couple settled back in Avilla. She worked a number of years in the Herzfield Insurance Agency in Benton, AR.
Mildred’s life centered around service and family. She hosted many gatherings and meals at her home at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and on birthdays. She was a great cook, whether she fixed turkey and dressing, ham, fried catfish, or chili. For decades she kept a garden, canning and freezing its bounty to feed her family. Mildred’s home was a place where stories were renewed and family stayed close. For a time, she and Marion had great fun bowling in leagues at Benton. She usually kept a cat or dog around and was partial to poodles. She took great pleasure in the plants, flowers, and hummingbird feeders on her deck. She enjoyed making quilt tops even when she could no longer finish an entire quilt.
Mildred remained remarkably active into her mid-90s. She expressed her faith in meetings and devoted service to the Zion Lutheran Church in Avilla, AR. Her legacy lives on through her family and life-long friends. Her love continues in every life she has touched.
