Benton police arrested a man Saturday afternoon after receiving a report that he had come to a local store to meet a minor.
Officers responded around 2:20 p.m. on April 4 to Academy Sports and Outdoors in Benton. Dispatch advised that a caller reported a man inside the store who planned to meet a 13-year-old girl.
When officers arrived, they spoke with the caller. He pointed out the suspect inside the store. Police later identified the man as David Sprayberry, 63, of Little Rock.
The witness told officers the supposed minor was actually a decoy. He said Sprayberry admitted to having illegal material on his phone, and that the encounter had been recorded.
Two others at the scene provided additional evidence. They gave officers printed messages, a phone containing the same messages, and a hard drive. They said the materials showed communication between Sprayberry and the decoy.
Officers then made contact with Sprayberry inside the store. During the interaction, a witness told police that Sprayberry admitted to viewing explicit videos involving young children.
Police asked Sprayberry about his phone. He told them he left it at home. Officers searched him with consent but did not find a phone.
Officers reviewed the messages provided by witnesses. The messages showed communication with someone posing as a teenage girl. Police said the messages included requests for sexual activity.
Witnesses told officers they believed Sprayberry’s phone was in his vehicle. Officers noted that matched the timeline described in the messages.
Police collected the evidence, including the phone, printed messages, and hard drive. They then transported Sprayberry to the Benton Police Department.
Officers impounded his vehicle and had it towed.Detectives took over the case.
Sprayberry faces a charge of sexual indecency with a child, according to the incident report.
