If your litter is loose, it could net you a fine, community service, and even a misdemeanor charge. Arkansas agencies are picking up on their penalties.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), Arkansas Highway Police, and Keep Arkansas Beautiful are launching a new enforcement campaign this July. The initiative targets the secure transport of waste to prevent debris from escaping onto roadways and creating safety hazards for motorists.
Litter removal cost ARDOT approximately $9.7 million last year. To combat this, police will increase enforcement of state laws requiring waste to be covered. Violators may face misdemeanor charges, fines, or community service. Officials emphasize that the goal is a cleaner “Natural State” rather than revenue generation.
Arkansas law prohibits individuals from littering on public property and requires vehicles transporting waste, garbage, or other materials to secure their loads to prevent debris from escaping onto roadways. Violations may result in misdemeanor charges, fines, community service, and responsibility for removing any litter or debris caused by the violation.
Because vehicles transporting waste are a significant source of Highway litter, AHP will increase enforcement efforts to ensure compliance with Arkansas laws governing the secure transport of waste materials.
Residents interested in the Adopt-A-Highway program can contact the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Office at (501) 569-2227. For questions regarding litter laws, contact the Highway Police at (501) 569-2421.
