The Saline County 250 Commission, in partnership with the Arkansas 250 Commission, will host From the Mines to the Frontlines on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at the Bauxite Historical Museum. The ceremony will honor our nation’s veterans and celebrate Bauxite’s vital role in America’s victory during World War II. The county will unveil an official Arkansas 250 Historical Marker—recognizing one of the most significant sites in the state’s history.
The event is part of Arkansas’s participation in America’s 250th Anniversary, a nationwide effort to commemorate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Across the country, communities are coming together to reflect on the people and places that have helped shape our nation’s story.
In Arkansas, the Arkansas 250 Commission, appointed by Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and chaired by Secretary Shea Lewis, is leading the charge to highlight our state’s proud history. One of its key initiatives is the Arkansas 250 Historical Marker Program, created through the Division of Arkansas Heritage. Eleven sites across the state have been selected for these markers, each representing a pivotal moment or contribution in Arkansas’s past.
The Bauxite Historical Museum was chosen to host the first marker unveiling because of the area’s extraordinary contributions to the war effort. During World War II, mines in the Bauxite region supplied more than 95% of the nation’s bauxite ore, the raw material used to produce aluminum for over 300,000 military aircraft built for the Allied forces. At the height of production in 1943, output surged to more than six million tons, boosting Arkansas’s economy while helping secure victory overseas.
“‘From the Mines to the Frontlines,’ the City of Bauxite and our veterans have played a significant role in the history of our great nation. America would not be the country it is today had it not been for the contributions of our miners right here in Bauxite and our veterans who answered the call to serve. Their sacrifice and hard work embody the very spirit of American strength, perseverance, and service,” said Trevor Villines, Saline County 250 Commission Chair.
“As The Natural State, Arkansas has always celebrated the land and resources that define our history,” said Shea Lewis, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism and Chair of the Arkansas250 Commission. “This first historic marker in Bauxite honors the veterans and natural resources that helped shape both our state and the nation during World War II, ” said Secretary Shea Lewis, Arkansas Parks Heritage and Tourism and Arkansas 250 Commission Chair.
In addition to the historical marker unveiling, From the Mines to the Frontlines will include a special recognition of all veterans in Saline County, along with participation from local schools, students, and community members who are helping make the event possible.
A reception will immediately follow the ceremony inside the Bauxite Historical Museum, where guests are invited to enjoy refreshments and view exhibits that tell the story of Bauxite’s remarkable role in American history.
For those unable to attend in person, the event will be livestreamed on YouTube and can be viewed on the Bauxite School District’s website at www.bauxiteminers.org/page/live.
Special thanks go out to the many individuals, organizations, and partners across Saline County who have come together to help plan and support this event. Their commitment to honoring our past and celebrating our veterans embodies the very spirit of what America’s 250th anniversary is all about.
