A deadly aircraft accident at LaGuardia Airport has left two people dead and dozens injured, prompting a temporary shutdown of one of the nation’s busiest airports. Read more below.
According to officials, the incident occurred late Sunday night when an Air Canada Express regional jet arriving from Montreal collided with an emergency vehicle on the runway while landing. Authorities confirmed that the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash.
The plane was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members, and at least 41 people were taken to hospitals, though many were later released.
Two personnel inside the emergency vehicle — reportedly a firefighting truck responding to another incident — were also injured but are expected to recover.
Initial reports indicate the collision happened around 11:40 p.m. as the aircraft landed. The emergency vehicle had been dispatched to assist with a separate situation involving another plane.
Investigators are examining how both the aircraft and the vehicle ended up on the same runway at the same time. Early information suggests both had been cleared to use the runway within minutes of each other.
Following the crash, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop, and LaGuardia Airport was closed for several hours, causing hundreds of flight cancellations and delays.
Flights were diverted to nearby airports, including JFK and Newark, as officials worked to secure the scene and begin the investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash, with a focus on runway coordination, air traffic control communications, and operational procedures.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and additional details are expected as officials analyze flight data, communications, and physical evidence from the scene.
