Saline County, Arkansas
1908 – The first Saline County Fair was held in Benton on September 29th and 30th in 1908. It was organized by the newly formed Saline County Fair Association. It featured a parade that began at Narroway and Market Streets in downtown Benton before proceeding to the fairgrounds which was on East Street at the time. This fair established a tradition that remains part of Saline County’s history. – Read more at this link

Arkansas
1864 – The Skirmish at White Oak Creek took place on September 29 during the Union’s Fort Smith Expedition. Union troops encountered Confederate forces near White Oak Creek as Federal forces advanced toward Van Buren. The fighting was part of a series of engagements that ended with Union troops reaching Van Buren on September 30. – Read more at this link
1891 – The Arkansas cotton pickers’ strike continued amid violence in eastern Arkansas. The labor dispute had begun earlier in the year among Black cotton workers seeking better wages and working conditions. Violence surrounding the strike became one of the state’s significant episodes of racial and labor conflict in the late nineteenth century. – Read more at this link
United States
1789 – On September 29, Congress passed an act officially establishing the U.S. Army under the new Constitution. The legislation adapted the military force inherited from the Continental Congress to the new federal government. – Read more at this link
World
1941 – Nazi German forces and their collaborators began the mass shooting of Jews at Babi Yar, a ravine near Kyiv. More than 33,000 Jewish men, women and children were murdered there over September 29–30, 1941. The site later became one of the most infamous locations associated with the Holocaust. – Read more at this link
1829 – London’s Metropolitan Police Service was established on September 29. The organization became popularly known as Scotland Yard and helped establish a model for modern professional policing. – Read more at this link
