The Anderson Sisters were legendary teachers for the students who knew them late in their teaching careers, not only for their longevity at Bauxite but mostly due to the memories we still carry. A few of those memories are noted below:
“If you were fortunate enough to have 7th and 8tl grade English with Miss Laura you were going to learn how to spell words. She required us to turn our spelling words in every day with each word being written ten times.”
“l personally got my penmanship from Miss Laura. I was fortunate to have been hired two times on work application for my penmanship. She was very kind to her students, and I enjoyed her class.”
“Miss Audrey would read aloud to us at the end of every day, she read us all the “Little House” books, and I still love them to this day. She fostered a love of reading in me. Miss Laura was “perfection” when it came to grammar and spelling; because of her, I sailed through all my required college English classes without a problem. She insisted on neatness and penmanship, and she would have been proud of some of the beautiful nurses notes I wrote during my 42-year career in those days before computers. I was blessed to be taught by both of them.”
“l don’t remember if it was 7th or 8th grade, but I remember diagramming sentences and conjugating verbs. I go, you go, he, she or it goes, we go, you go, they go…. I don’t think anyone would have dared say “l seen” in her class.”
“Diagramming sentences would have been Miss Laura’s idea of a fun Friday night!”
“One thing I remember is the difference between “take” and “bring.” A lot of people took when they should have brought.”
“Miss Laura introduced us to poetry. I remember Battle of the Light Brigade. I can still feel the shakes from standing up and reciting it in front of the entire class.”
