Saline County, Arkansas
1998 – War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock was listed on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places on September 28, 1998. The stadium has a special connection to Saline County because Benton and Bryant high schools have played their annual Salt Bowl rivalry game there for decades, drawing huge crowds to Little Rock for one of Arkansas’s best-known high school football traditions. – Read more at this link

Arkansas
1862 – Confederate General Theophilus Holmes ordered the construction of fortifications at Arkansas Post and elsewhere along the Arkansas and White rivers on September 28. The order came as Confederate leaders responded to growing Union military activity along the Mississippi River and the Arkansas waterways. – Read more at this link

1781 – American and French forces began the siege of Yorktown on September 28 during the Revolutionary War. The allied forces surrounded the British army commanded by General Charles Cornwallis, beginning the campaign that led to the British surrender at Yorktown in October. – Read more at this link
1928 – Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming noticed that a mold growing in his laboratory was killing bacteria. His observation led to the discovery of penicillin, which would eventually transform the treatment of bacterial infections. – Read more at this link
World
1542 – Explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo arrived at what is now San Diego Bay on September 28. His expedition is traditionally credited with making the first documented European exploration of the California coast. – Read more at this link
1994 – The passenger ferry MS Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea on September 28 during a storm while traveling from Tallinn to Stockholm. More than 850 people died, making it one of Europe’s deadliest peacetime maritime disasters. – Read more at this link
