Arkansas
1864 – The Battle of Fort Davidson, part of the Union defense against Confederate General Sterling Price’s Missouri campaign, took place on September 27 near Pilot Knob, Missouri. Arkansas troops participated in Price’s campaign, which would eventually bring thousands of Confederate soldiers back through Arkansas. – Read more at this link
1864 – Confederate forces also attacked the Union garrison at Marianna in eastern Arkansas on September 27. The Battle of Marianna was part of the fighting associated with the larger Federal campaign in Arkansas and Missouri during the final year of the Civil War. – Read more at this link

1908 – Production of the Model T automobile began at Ford’s Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit. The Model T would become one of the most influential automobiles in American history, helping make automobile ownership available to a much larger portion of the population. – Read more at this link
1939 – Kathy Whitworth was born in Monahans, Texas. She became one of the most successful players in women’s professional golf and won numerous LPGA tournaments during her career. – Read more at this link
World
1940 – Germany, Italy and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact in Berlin on September 27, formally aligning the three countries during World War II. The agreement became a central document of the Axis alliance. – Read more at this link
1986 – Metallica bassist Cliff Burton died in a bus accident in Sweden on September 27 while the band was touring Europe. He was 24 years old. – Read more at this link
