It’s summer time and many teen and college students are looking for part-time and seasonal work in or near Saline County, Arkansas. We’ve made two lists for you below. The first tells the minimum age to work at nearly 50 businesses. After that, we have a list of current job opportunities that are part-time, seasonal and/or entry-level and located in central Arkansas. 👀

Minimum ages

First, let’s answer questions about the minimum age to work at various retail and restaurant jobs. In Arkansas, the absolute baseline legal age to work in standard retail or food service positions is 14 years old This is under state law and the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.

On the other hand, federal law prohibits minors under 16 from doing certain tasks. For example: baking, operating power-driven slicers, or managing commercial fryers without automatic basket lifters. Therefore, many corporations have a minimum of age 18. Establishments that sell alcohol typically require employees to be a minimum of age 18 or 21.

This list outlines the minimum ages to be eligible for hire at 48 major retail and restaurant brands:

Must be age 14+

• Baskin-Robbins – Great for first-time teen jobs; basic counter service.
• Chick-fil-A – Varies by franchise location; some prefer 15 or 16.
• Dairy Queen – Front-of-house roles are open to 14+ depending on the franchise.
• Kroger – Can hire 14/15 for courtesy clerks (bagging); 16 for cashiers.
• McDonald’s – Dependent on franchise operator rules.

Must be age 16+

• Arby’s – Slicer operation limits kitchen staff; counter staff is occasionally 15.
• Best Buy – Sales and customer service roles are open to teens aged 16+.
• Burger King – Corporate standard is generally 16, though some franchises allow 15.
• Chipotle – Corporate hiring policy sets the baseline at 16 for crew.
• Colton’s Steak House – Support staff starts at 16; alcohol handling requires 18+.
• CVS Pharmacy – Cashiers start at 16; pharmacy roles require an 18+ limit.
• Dollar Tree / Family Dollar – General stock and cashier roles are open to 16 and up.
• Domino’s Pizza – Inside crew starts at 16; delivery drivers must be 18+.
• Dunkin’ – Shift tasks and espresso equipment generally require a 16+ age limit.
• Hardee’s – Standard crew member baseline is 16.
• KFC – Commercial fryer restrictions mean a baseline of 16.
• Kohl’s – Sales associates and stockroom handlers start at 16.
• McAlister’s Deli – Slicers and kitchen layout keep the hiring floor at 16.
• Old Navy – Brand associates must be at least 16 to apply.
• Olive Garden – Hosts/bussers can be 16; servers handling alcohol must be 18+.
• Panera Bread – Associated baking and kitchen equipment set the floor at 16.
• Papa Johns – Inside staff starts at 16; delivery drivers require an 18+ minimum.
• PetSmart – Store associates can be hired at 16; specialty roles vary.
• Pizza Hut – Age 16 for team members; must be 18+ to drive deliveries.
• Popeyes – Kitchen safety standards mandate a 16+ policy.
• Slim Chickens – Fryer and kitchen safety keeps corporate/franchise limit at 16.
• Sonic Drive-In – Carhop and kitchen restrictions usually limit hiring to 16+.
• Starbucks – Corporate policy mandates a minimum hiring age of 16.
• Subway – Knife handling and toaster oven use means 16 is preferred.
• Taco Bell – Most Saline County locations default to 16 for team members.
• Target – Must be 16 for store associates; 18 for distribution centers.
• Texas Roadhouse – Hosts can be 16; kitchen crew and servers must be 18+.
• TJ Maxx / Marshalls – Part-time retail floor and register roles start at 16.

• Zaxby’s – Kitchen equipment rules keep the baseline at 16.

Must be age 18+

• Academy Sports + Outdoors – Due to firearm sales on the floor, the strict hiring baseline is 18.
• Applebee’s – Dining room/server roles may vary, but bar area presence sets floor to 18.
• AutoZone – Parts delivery and retail operations require a minimum age of 18.
• Buffalo Wild Wings – Due to the heavy bar environment, the typical baseline is 18.
• Chili’s – Host/buses can sometimes be 16, but servers/bartenders must be 18+.
• Dick’s Sporting Goods – Corporate policy requires associates to be 18 or older.
• Dollar General – Requires a minimum age of 18 due to solo shift options and alcohol sales.
• Harbor Freight Tools – Forklift presence and tool sales set the application minimum to 18.
• Home Depot – Heavy machinery and loaded stock bays set a hard corporate floor at 18.
• Lowe’s – Strict policy requiring all store associates to be at least 18.
• O’Reilly Auto Parts – Commercial driving and retail compliance mandate an 18+ policy.

Arkansas Labor Note: As of recent state law changes (the Arkansas Youth Hiring Act), 14 and 15-year-olds no longer need to obtain an official state-issued employment certificate to begin working, though federal guidelines regarding maximum working hours during school weeks remain strictly enforced.
