Join in the global Earthquake drill October 15th.
International ShakeOut Day is teaching people all over the world what they should do to be prepared during seismic activity. The statewide push comes as Arkansas experiences ongoing seismic activity along the New Madrid Fault Line.
Families, schools, and businesses can learn by participating in the global exercise on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, at 10:15 a.m. Central time. Read more below.
Millions of participants worldwide will pause to practice the life-saving “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill designed to protect lives during a major earthquake.
More than 29,000 Arkansans have already registered for this year’s exercise, joining 1.4 million participants across the Central United States and over 50.3 million globally.
Geologists warn that the New Madrid Fault Line holds a significant probability of generating a magnitude 6.5 or greater earthquake, which would cause catastrophic damage across Eastern and Central Arkansas.
In addition to practicing the physical response drill, safety experts advise residents to use the event as a prompt to inspect emergency supply kits, review family safety plans, and anchor heavy furniture or appliances that could fall during tremors.
Participation in International ShakeOut Day is free and open to individuals, schools, businesses, and government agencies. Online registration and preparedness materials are available at shakeout.org/register.
Additional earthquake drill guides can be found at earthquakecountry.org/step5, while regional seismic tracking is available through the Arkansas Office of the State Geologist.
