City of Bryant begins search for City Attorney to complete Farmer’s term

The City of Bryant is looking for applicants to serve the remainder of the City Attorney term.

On March 3rd, 2020, Bryant City Attorney Josh Farmer was elected to the office of Circuit Judge and will begin the transition into his new position over the next 60 days.

The City is now taking resumes for qualified applicants who are interested in finishing his current 2019-2022 elected term. Applicants must be a licensed Arkansas attorney and reside within the city limits of Bryant.

Send a cover letter and resume to [email protected]. The mayor will begin interviewing mid-month.  He will make a recommendation for the Bryant City Council’s approval at the next city council meeting.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

BRYANT CITY ATTORNEY

Mission

To protect the City of Bryant from exposure to liability through effective risk analysis and providing effective legal guidance before, during, and after city action.  This office will also represent the city in all prosecutorial actions within the court system.

General Explanation of Duties

This position is an elected position and the official must reside within the city limits of Bryant.  The duties of this office include:

  • Advise the Mayor, the City Council, members of city boards, commissions, and other city officials in all legal matters pertaining to city operations and interest.
  • Represents the City of Bryant in all legal matters that result in litigation before local, state, and federal courts and administrative boards.
  • Prepare ordinances and resolutions that come before the City Council for consideration.
  • Attend city council, staff, and other meetings.
  • Draft and review contracts, agreements, leases, and all other legal documents pertaining to city affairs.
  • Respond to EEOC charges and requests for information.
  • Respond to requests under the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act.
  • Update policies and ordinances to maintain compliance with changes in state and federal law.
  • Work with outside counsel retained by City for preparation of bonds and litigation.
  • The City Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of all criminal and civil City of Bryant code violations occurring within the corporate limits of the City of Bryant and shall persecute all misdemeanor criminal violations occurring within the corporate limits of the City of Bryant unless the city, if under contract with the Saline County Prosecuting Attorney or another qualified attorney to prosecute such criminal cases.

Election Information

This office is currently held by Josh Farmer, who was elected to serve in a four-year term starting January 1st, 2019 and ending December 31st, 2022.

Mr. Farmer was elected in 2020 to the office of Circuit Judge and will begin transitioning from his current position as city attorney into his new role as a circuit judge in the fall of this year.

This leaves the Bryant City Attorney position open, for a qualified candidate to complete his original 2019-2022 elected term. This candidate must live within the city limits of Bryant and must be a licensed attorney within the State of Arkansas.

The next election for this position will be in 2022.
