Steve Spickard
Steve Spickard was voted President while he was in the restroom.
Steve Spickard, a 1974 Bauxite graduate and alumni, started out coaching his son’s Mini Miners 4th, 5th, and 6th grade football team in 1988 through 1990. Steve later found his calling in helping Coach Jon Watson, the Bauxite high school football coach, keeping the stats on the sidelines for 18 years. He never missed a game. The last two years he helped Coach Watson as a commentator, calling the plays on the local Benton radio station KBBA.

In 1993 he went before the Bauxite School Board, along with the help of Tommy Oliver, to bring the sport of baseball back to the school. They cleaned up the overgrown baseball field across from the Bauxite Post Office, so the young athletes had a place to practice and scheduled their games there and at Sardis Ball Park. It was more than a few years before the new baseball field was built. Thanks to Steve and Tommy’s efforts, Baseball was thriving again at Bauxite!
Steve attended the Bauxite Old Timers luncheon one day many years ago. He said there were only around 10 in attendance. The members told him they were getting too old to continue and it needed younger blood. They encouraged him to take over this daunting task that had become too much for them. He graciously declined. He stepped away to use the restroom and said when he returned, they announced they took a vote he was now the new President of the Bauxite Old Timers. This was not something he felt he could do but he could not let it die so he took on that job with pride and honor. He held that position until his death in 2024.
Steve Spickard was here, and it mattered. It mattered to so many young boys who walked onto the football field. From the practice field behind Pine Haven Elementary, training those 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Mini Miners or at The Pit at the high school, it mattered. He loved watching them play and his heart and soul was there every Friday night, encouraging them and helping them find their spirit and pride to be a Bauxite Miner.
