I have long been concerned about whether or not our sheriff's, past and present, run a background check on the officers they hire.  In a recent meeting with Mike Frost, this topic came up.  I questioned whether it made sense to have a detective who had been arrested in the past for selling drugs out of a Benton PD squad car.  In response to my question, I was given a sermon on forgiveness.

Likewise, the fact that another current employee, who appears  to be an administrator of Pennington's Bruce4Sheriff website, also has a "checkered" past.  I just don't understand how you can expect respect for an administration that doesn't mind that their deputies have a criminal background.

For Henry, who does not like to read documents, I will summarize:

On July 18, 2005, Richard Scott, Saline County Deputy Sheriff, was arrested for 3rd degree domestic battery.  The investigating officer wrote in his report that Scott was drinking at a bar in Little Rock where his X-wife was a waitress.  Scott wanted her to enter a wet shirt contest and she refused.  He became angy and punched her in the left eye where she had visible injuries.  The officer states that Scott was visibly intoxicated.  He was transported to jail.

@Katee--Thanks, just tired of the mud slinging.  I'll be posting a NEW Blog here soon.  Front page Benton Courier  Benton FOP ENDORSES Pennington for County Sheriff.  Not "Good Old Boy Stuff"  Just the plain facts WHY they endorse Bruce and WHY they DO NOT endorse Ward. FACTS--FACTS--FACTS.  Talking about Ward.

Hang in there.

Why can't James and Bruce run in an election with out people like Ms. Ives constantly spreading hate and discontent! It's People like her that give politics a bad name!

Good thing we aren't paying you to think DAP! Your way off!! I'm simply a citizen of Saline County who is tired of Ms.Ives dramatic quest for attention!! No more, no less!!

Katee, Have you read any of Pennington's daughter's comments on Facebook? If I didn't know better, I'd say you are Pennington's daughter. You sound just like her.

Well of course its about Ms. Ives, Mr. Hutto. She has to get some kind of attention! Kind of sad if you really sit down and think about it!!

This is NOT, I repeat NOT about Ms Ives.  It is an election concernming two (2) Republicians running for the office of Sheriff.

ALL Deputies are screened and tested.  MANY have been released and/or fired from SCSO in the past seven years since I have been on patrol.

If YOU have issues about hiring/firing of County employees go talk with the Sheriff or the Department head of the office in which YOU have a concern over.  NOT on a public website and dragging some person through the mud AFTER the justice system has said they are INNOCENT!

ENOUGH is ENOUGH.  Tuseday night will determined WHO will go forward and challenge the Democrate in the final.  Good Luck.

By the Way, I do SUPPORT and VOTED for Bruce Pennington.  The Benton Couier had front page endorcement of Bruce Pennington by the Benton FOP for solid reason.

I have told you over and over that the Law Enforcement community/Chief/Officers/Deputies will SHY away from (NOT TRUST) Ward due to his unstable, lying,  vindictive, harrassing, ways.  No education, No experience, Little to no training (FAIL the LRPD agility test TWICE in 1999 and lied about this on the web to a person who was in the same class) and the list goes on and on and on.............

Well DANG please remember Linda Ives has been a victim of police, govt. and political corruption for many years! I am glad she has let us in the public know about these things! After seeing the abuse that has happened in the past, all hires should be closely screened and anger management courses should be given to all deputies to see if they can tolerate the life of a cop. I know yall deal with crazies everyday and racest/crude remarks by people. And for just a few minutes put yourself in Mrs. Ives shoes and try to understand what ungodly hell she has been through!

@ A.B. Thank you for your kind words and I agree that it is discouraging. There are some fine people we have come to know in our neighborhood and church and hate the idea of relocating.

Unfortunately I understand the " good ole boys" system, being raised in small townTexas where my grandfather was the Sheriff for many terms.

By his example, principles and morality he did not tolerate that system. He expected his men (deputies) to be good men of good moral fiber and character in and out of uniform. With the understanding that they are a direct reflection of not only him, but the department and most importantly the citizens.

You can judge the leadership by the actions of their charge. Very sad indeed.

I must say, you're dang good at conducting the "business as usual."

It's one thing to bring up an incident that occurred, it's a whole different thing to plaster their name after they've been properly dealt with simply for politics. That's why I haven't and won't name the guilty, corrupt people you associate with. I'm assuming those same people are the ones mentioned by the FOP in their endorsement of Pennington.

transparency in public office is never a  bad thing, -- at least for the public,  and shining a light on wrongdoing is not a smear campaign -- it is called the public's right to know.  And guess what Chris -- no one is surprised when the "brotherhood" leaps to the defense of even the bad LEOs protecting their dirty little secrets to the end -- it is business as usual in Saline County.
