We are trying to find ways to cut our energy costs this winter. We hear that purchasing Programmable Thermostats can shave off significant amounts. I even hear that their is now Call Center Software that allows you to dial into your thermostat to regulate the temperature while you are out of town.
What are some of the ways that you guys are using to cut back on energy costs as winter approaches? Any tips or advice welcome.

This past year we did quite a bit of remodeling and updating. One thing we did was we put in a new heat and air unit - 4 ton - and put in new duct work. We also put in the Programmable Thermostat. It has made a huge difference in our monthly costs vs savings.

1. Go to Centerpoint Energy and Reliant.com - search for energy saving tips ... these tips are extremely helpful in costing back costs.
2. Trim down your groceries and misc items by preparing a list and meals before you go shopping. Also shop for what you NEED not want.

Hope this helps .... have a good day : )

I plan on burning more wood. My fireplace will easily heat my main room but not the bedroms. I have also switched to compact flourescent light bulbs.

I have read the same thing about the thermostats but have not tried one. If you are on a heat pump Doug Rye says to turn your thermostat up only one degree at a time or the auxillary heat will kick on and burn a bunch of energy.

It depends upon your location. Some folks don't have high speed internet and are still on dial-up. Jason, here are some previous posts that might be useful: http://www.mysaline.com/forum/topics/should-i-switch-to-att-uverse?commentId=873760%3AComm

Thanks, but the credit should go to Linda Ives. She posted her electric bill under Greg White’s topic on Benton Utilities. It made me think of how useful the information could be, if gathered in a comparable format. I was hoping to get enough data t…

Just an observation, but I would think it's best not for an anonymous poster such as yourself to call on others to do what you will not do. But maybe that's just me.
