Most people who ask for a phone report do so because that is really all that can be done. Say a lawn mower is stolen; if the person has serial #s the dept. has a communication system with pawn shops to notify any attempt to pawn these items. Though most articles are traded for drugs.
This report system is effective, and neccesary to allow the 5(FIVE) patrol deputies, all the Quorum Court (your JP's) will allow the department, to be out in the county; all 740 sq miles! A hostage situation often requires three patrol and the S.W.A.T. team. on this same night, there is a two vehicle acc. with 4 fatalities; theres at least twp officers, needing three to help w/traffic; and pray there is a reserve on that night. And in East End there is an armed robbery, with shots fired.
The S.O. needs at least 1/2 the officers that Benton has; and too many nights, and days that still isn't enough. Thank God for reserves that also put their lives on the line. And the county always needs more. And back to the neighbors earlier referred to, why don't you start a neighborhood watch.

Comment by William Tell on May 2, 2012 at 10:24pm Sheriff Bruce Pennington had nothing to do with the down sizing of constables in Saline County.
Saline County Court Order C-20011-92, under Ark. Code Ann. 14-14-401, dissolved and replaced 13 townships with 2 townships. It was so ordered 11/10/11, Lanny Fite, Saline County Judge. 14-14-401. Establishes townships, people may want to look this up.

Comment by Linda Ives on May 2, 2012 at 10:43am That scenario certainly makes one wonder why the sheriff would do away with constables.
Comment by William Tell on May 2, 2012 at 10:09am I would like to add, when a resident calls dispatch for Saline County (someone who lives outside the city limits in the county) to relate a situation, it will either be a 911 emergency call, in which an officer will be dispatched or a resident may call a non emergency number to dispatch in which the resident may be given a choice of whether they want to see an officer or not and would like to make a report over the phone. The 911 dispatch is not directly under the Saline County Sheriff's Office. This is how I understand it.
