Saline County Sheriff - Should windshield time be the priority?

Our county is a mess.  Saline County has a reputation and it's not a good one.  We are the butt of many jokes; ones that cannot be defended because they are true.

Regarding the race for Sheriff and law enforcement experience, no one can deny that Pennington has more windshield time than Ward.  My first thought is "So".  The issues of this county aren't that we can't find and arrest the criminals, it's that the system isn't working or isn't being managed effectively.

It has been my experience that in order to fix a problem, you have to identify the root cause and work to eliminate it. We need someone who can identify the issues and work to eliminate them.  We need someone who will stand up to the opposition (whoever they are) and work to obtain what this county needs, whether it's a balanced budget, more deputies, procedural checks and balances, better technology, etc.  We need someone who admits there is still work to be done.  Windshield time alone isn't enough.

I want to feel secure.  I want my children to feel secure.  I want my grandchildren to feel secure.  If we don't do something soon, we're going to start losing residents, just like Little Rock did 25 years ago.  When that happens, property devalues, schools lose funding, businesses close, etc.  Am I overreacting?  History and statistics can answer that question.

If Saline County is a mess, then everyone in it is a mess? This is not true. There are many of us who get up every day and do what we are supposed to do, even when nobody is around (integrity). My children are safe in the area where they live and play, Saline County, we live in the unincorporated area of the county and love it.  If I were looking for a place to live now and I read these posts by such a few negative people, I would become suspect of them bashing their local law enforcement. I would suspect them of having numerous run ins with local law enforcement, maybe put in for a position with an agency and was turned down, maybe promised a position if they bash and detract from the current law enforcement in this county. I always look between the lines and dismiss constant negative bashing. Saline County is growing, lets keep Sheriff Bruce Pennington in, a man who can grow with it.  Sheriff Pennington stands up for right, uses his budget wisely, has gotten technology that puts our deputies on task with other deputies in the state, the fleet management program is excellent and keeps our deputies in safe vehicles to answer calls. Someone said the Saline County Sheriff's Office has not received any new deputies in 20 years, incorrect. Since 1992, 4 new patrol deputies have been added  as well as part time deputies. The Saline County jail has new staff for our new facility.

Guitarman, that's a lovely thought but it's not realistic. "Good ole boy" law enforcement is alive and kickin' in Saline County and in some cases it doesn't matter how clean your nose is, you're screwed.

So who drives the Saline County Tahoes? Admin or Patrol?

I'm sorry but you are overeacting. As long as you keep YOUR OWN nose clean you stand a very good chance of not having anything to do with a crime in Saline County.

Here is exactly what Mr. Hutto said "those items were a NO COST to taxpyers". Obviously you have a problem compreheding what is said on this blog. Not to mention you said on the other blog that Bryant did not pay for there Tahoes. This shows you have no clue what you are talking about when it comes to the governments expenses. AS Hutto's mother said "money does not grow on trees"

I am proud to live in Saline County, I feel we should not run our county down, especially in a public forum. This county has grown to approximately 107,000 people. I noticed in the Saline Courier in which the County Collector published approximately 37 pages in very small print, of persons that have not paid their taxes. This translated  to fewer tax dollars for dispersal in county gov't. The Sheriff's Office doesn't waste tax dollars, it has turned back over $1,600,000.00 back to the general fund for service to the county gov't, in the last three years. We' re not losing residents, we are gaining now and Bryant was named one of top 100 cities to live in, in the U.S. This has occurred with-in the last three years in which Sheriff Pennington has been Sheriff. I live in the country which is patrolled by the Sheriff's Office and I feel completely safe for my family and me. Thank you Sheriff Pennington and the S.O. Also, Experience is every thing along with the ability to work the budget. A budget is a guideline for operations, which must be flexible.

You're the only one suggesting that I or anyone thinks that these items do not come from tax dollars. You clearly have some comprehension issues here. Lemme try again for you...

The items you are whining about did not take away ANY money from Saline Counties budget.

One more time for good measure. Hell, I've already said it to you on several occasions and you still ignore it.

he items you are whining about did not take away ANY money from Saline Counties budget.

Learn something and stop using bs claims.

WE the taxpayers pay for all things in the government. You have this grand idea that money that comes from the federal government is FREE. Maybe you don’t pay your federal taxes, but I do. I don’t care what pocket this money comes from, if it’s being wasted then its government waste. And if it’s in that department then it’s the Sheriffs WASTE.

Trust me when I saw am not only looking to change sheriffs for the waste that has happened, but its hard to denying that he is a part of it. When it comes to the QC I would like to see a lot more change there also. Many of these guys run under a Republican name, but are far from it.

Casey Smith----Please follow the flow unto which several individuals have attempted to explain how and why we can get additional manpower and equipment.

we are but a few of the counties in Arkansas that do not have a sales tax on the County General Fund.  As Chris has explained it cost approximaely $600,000 per person to staff (1) patrol position over 5 years (car, gas, insurance, salary, repairs etc...)  We need aproximately 2 people per shift (we have 4 shifts to fill)  8 people=4.8 million over 5 years.  Not chump change.

So guess the people need to approve a tax increase to accomendate the 4.8 million we don not have a budget for.  As your mother told you "money does not grow on trees."

Now as for the command centers, Tahoes and any other item you want to throw into the wind...those items were a NO COST to taxpyers.  Please do your research and you will have very little to add to the blog against Bruce Pennington and his administration.Visit for more information.

We have a great county, but will ALWAYS have drugs, burgularies, arsons, death, dog problems, child custody issues, theft of property and so on.  All law enforcement agencies do a great job and work exteremly hard for you and your family.  So do not paly into anyones promise that "I will rid the county of drug dealers, meth labs etc.."

Bruce and the QC have worked together and are doing the best they can to provide a safe and effecient service to the public.  NO one works harder for the deputies than Bruce...NO ONE!
