I have long been concerned about whether or not our sheriff's, past and present, run a background check on the officers they hire.  In a recent meeting with Mike Frost, this topic came up.  I questioned whether it made sense to have a detective who had been arrested in the past for selling drugs out of a Benton PD squad car.  In response to my question, I was given a sermon on forgiveness.

Likewise, the fact that another current employee, who appears  to be an administrator of Pennington's Bruce4Sheriff website, also has a "checkered" past.  I just don't understand how you can expect respect for an administration that doesn't mind that their deputies have a criminal background.

For Henry, who does not like to read documents, I will summarize:

On July 18, 2005, Richard Scott, Saline County Deputy Sheriff, was arrested for 3rd degree domestic battery.  The investigating officer wrote in his report that Scott was drinking at a bar in Little Rock where his X-wife was a waitress.  Scott wanted her to enter a wet shirt contest and she refused.  He became angy and punched her in the left eye where she had visible injuries.  The officer states that Scott was visibly intoxicated.  He was transported to jail.

Chris -- my last post seems to have fallen in a black hole somewhere, so I will repeat it.  This happened on another post to Heather earlier -- it disappeared so I reposted and a short time later it appeared.  So if this shows up twice, that is my story and I am sticking to it.

In regard to your question about a wreck that Ward was supposed to have had :   He never wrecked a squad car, however, there was an incident where a rock hit the oil pan of his car while he was in pursuit, and he lost all of the oil out of it.  He was in constant contact with the on duty seargeant while in pursuit, as required, and was never told to stop the pursuit.

Chris -- I hope your curiosity is wearing out because I certainly am.  BTW -- it is a curious turn of events that while you were supporting Ward in 08, I was supporting Pennington :))

Mr. Hutto -- I have no quarrel with you either, and I appreciated the kind words in your post.  Thank you Mr. Publius and Mr. Smith,  because those were my thoughts exactly about Mr. Hutto's suggestion on what I should do with regard to the investigation of my son's murder.

Casey, they should leave no stone unturned to solve this crime. It reminds me of the lead they had on the traskwood murder. There was a misspelling of the name so they gave up. Shame on them.

Can someone answer a simple question on here for me. Why is it when I go to Penningtons campaign site thier is no list of items he wants to accomplish in this next term. When I go to Wards site it has a huge list of things we would all like to see get done?

Comment by Casey Smith on May 6, 2012 at 11:11pm

Thank you Mr. Publius,

This is the attitude I do not want to see in our Sheriff’s Department. Why would a department in our county tell someone to go somewhere else to get help? Is it because they are not competent enough to do the investigation themself? I want to know that if a crime happens in my county that my Sheriff will do everything to get to the bottom of it. For to many years the Sheriffs have shoved Ms. Ives to other people instead of doing what they are hired to do. I hope you get what you need with a new Sheriff Ms. Ives because no one should ever go through the games you have had to go though with our law enforcement.

Mr. Hutto shame on you. The citizens of the County have a vested interest in solving ALL CRIME, ESPECIALLY VIOLENT CRIME, ESPECIALLY VIOLENT CRIME AGAINST CHILDREN. So you would advise Linda to go back to the FBI, to a private investigator? Did you read Linda's post why she supports Ward? What are you saying? Solve this crime yourself? I 've said it before and I say it again, you must be tired, if the department won't follow up on the leads for an unsolved murder, what will you do? I will go further, the guilt and depression of not pursuing every lead in this case should lie at the departments door, not at the Ives door. Shame on you. You should be gone for stupidity.

No, I don't carry copies of his paperwork. I suppose that wrecked vehicle is also a falsehood......... Just totally made up. Never happened. Had nothing to do with his departure...

Kinda curious.... What decisions are you referring too that he did not like?

Comment by Linda Ives on May 6, 2012 at 9:57pm

Chris -- Ward was not fired - he was a reserve deputy under Mask -- he quit because he did not like decisions being made by Bill Fields.  Do you have any proof that he was fired / copies of disciplinaries, etc.?  If so, I would like to see them.

Comment by Chris on May 6, 2012 at 9:36pm

Still curious about the views on Ward's departure as a Deputy.

Comment by Linda Ives on May 6, 2012 at 9:27pm

To Richard Scott -- I would just like to say I am not unsympathetic with your situation, and I certainly respect the fact that you have learned from your mistakes.  I believe you have shown more humanity and maturity than a number of your older counterparts -- maybe they will learn some things from you.

Comment by Bill M Hutto on May 6, 2012 at 9:17pm

Linda Ives:  NO ONE has a more vested interest in your case than you!  I cannot fathom the depression and guilt of not having this case closed.

I feel that you really need to appeal this matter to the FBI or higher as that was the last agency that handled that case or I would invest into an Independent private Investigator to do a better job.

Casey Smith and I do not see eye to eye on this subject BUT the 4 years Bruce has been in office has been a very productive and smooth transition to working with the QC and local agencies.  I could care less about past problems with BOTH Bruce and Ward.

As an officer Bruce has proven to me he a good leader.  Now should Ward win....Ward has to prove to be a good leader to ME and the other certified LEO.  I have nothing to prove to him as my record stands on its own.  I am a strong worker BUT word is that as soon as Ward gets in I will be gone.  Not a leader in my world.

Linda, I feel for you and your quest.  I hope that someday you will have the answers and peace in your heart.  I have no beef with you.  God Bless you.
