I have long been concerned about whether or not our sheriff's, past and present, run a background check on the officers they hire. In a recent meeting with Mike Frost, this topic came up. I questioned whether it made sense to have a detective who had been arrested in the past for selling drugs out of a Benton PD squad car. In response to my question, I was given a sermon on forgiveness.
Likewise, the fact that another current employee, who appears to be an administrator of Pennington's Bruce4Sheriff website, also has a "checkered" past. I just don't understand how you can expect respect for an administration that doesn't mind that their deputies have a criminal background.
For Henry, who does not like to read documents, I will summarize:
On July 18, 2005, Richard Scott, Saline County Deputy Sheriff, was arrested for 3rd degree domestic battery. The investigating officer wrote in his report that Scott was drinking at a bar in Little Rock where his X-wife was a waitress. Scott wanted her to enter a wet shirt contest and she refused. He became angy and punched her in the left eye where she had visible injuries. The officer states that Scott was visibly intoxicated. He was transported to jail.

Comment by Linda Ives on May 6, 2012 at 9:13pm Heather -- the documents were redacted by the FBI before being released under FOI. Believe me, I want to know the same things you want to know.
In reference to the FBI documents, I would say that, as with any investigation, and life in general, just because somebody says it doesn't make it true. The document that lists law enforcement officers has another page to it which lists the names of 12 witnesses who gave similar corroborating information -- and if I remember correctly, had been polygraphed.
For anyone who is interested, and not already a member, there is a FB page entitled "Justice for Kevin Ives and Don Henry" on which I have uploaded 80 or so documents. This is not my page, -- it belongs to Meghan Tidwell who, at the time she created it, lived in TN -- she has just returned from Afghanistan. If you wish to be a member to view the documents, just request membership and I will see that you are added to the group. The documents are in the "pictures" section as they blew up better there making them easier to read. I noticed they are a little hard to read on here.
Heather -- Ward has not promised me he would solve this case --that is not a promise that can be made by anyone in good faith. If he hires officers whose conduct is the same as those they are arresting and putting in prison, or if he lies to me, or is willing to look the other way in this case, you may be sure he will find himself in the same boat as Pennington.
Heather,
I feel the same as Linda does. If Mr. Ward does not fullfiill his campaign promises then he will be removed also. Mr. Pennington has had ample time to do something with this case. You have heard from the person most vested in this case as to how she was treated by the current Sheriff. I voted for Pennington last election. But ive also had a close eye on how hes run that office since. I will not vote for him again.
Thank you Linda for standing up and speaking the truth. Some of us in the county needs to know these things to be a informed voter.

Comment by Linda Ives on May 6, 2012 at 8:25pm Heather -- these documents were redacted by the FBI before being released under FOI. Obviously, I would like to know the same things you are wanting to know. These documents are from the 1993 - 1996 time frame. If Ward is elected and lies to me, or hires officers whose conduct is no better than the citizens they are arresting and putting in jail, or if he is willing to look the other way in the case of my son's murder, then you will see him in the same boat with me as Pennington now is.

Comment by Peter Glenn on May 6, 2012 at 8:11pm Linda Ives did not black out the names but rather the FBI according to her statement. I think it's called "priority one" for James Ward to not only look at the Ives situation but also problems in the county in general. It's called commitment. It's called needed changes. You are playing the "what if" game and it's a waste of time unless you have a crystal ball. But we can express our concerns at the ballot box and that is what happening now.

Comment by Peter Glenn on May 6, 2012 at 7:47pm Thank you Linda Ives for sharing the FBI information. I am shocked at the number of names of Saline County LEOs they named. And I am also shocked that the current sheriff did not tell the truth about doing all they could to find the witness, when you found him within minutes. That is a breach of trust. I have heard there are some good LEOs who also want change. Let's get James Ward elected to get those changes. Real change will take a lot of hard work, evaluation of the situation and listening to residents and LEOs who also want the best for the county. Keep sharing your documents with us because we need to know what you already know.
Comment by Linda Ives on May 6, 2012 at 5:41pm It is no secret that I have more than a casual interest in Saline County law enforcement -- what they do and don't do.
Do I believe there are good LEOs in Saline County, Yes I do, I believe there are many who work hard, are spread thin, and make sacrifices we are never aware of.
By the same token, It is my humble opinion that we also have had and still have some bad LEOs,
As a result of the handling, or perhaps the better description is MIS-handling, of my son's murder investigation and the national and international coverage of it, Saline County has EARNED the the reputation it now has for dirty cops.
My question for years has been -- why on earth won't, whoever is sheriff, do everything within their power to restore credibility to the department? I have watched each sheriff and the officers they employed very closely for nearly 25 years, and am continually amazed. I can assure you, that as long as they hire officers with criminal backgrounds, the public's perception will never change.
I don''t know officer Scott or Romeo, and I certainly hold no personal grudges against either of them, but I do have a problem with them -- particularly Romeo (who was arrested for selling drugs out of her Benton PD squad car) being employed by the sheriff's office. As my blog post was titled, THIS BOTHERS ME.
We all have opinions, we are all entitled to them, and my reason for expressing mine at this time is because I believe the fact that these 2 officers are working for Pennington reflects a lack of judgement on his part. You don't have to agree with me, but I still have the right to express my opinion.
I did not and have never "spewed any hate at all law enforcement", or called anyone a hater because they disagreed with my opinion, I have never made any comments to you that remotely resemble "that you are "trying to justify your hatred". You may even feel that my feelings about law enforcement are warped. But it is not without cause -- you have no idea what Saline County law enforcement has done to my family and countless others. I'm putting a couple of copies of FBI documents up, just to prove what I have been saying for 25 years. Redaction was done by the FBI. By the way -- Romeo and Scott are not the only problem officers in the sheriff's office.
