Bye-bye Big Tree at Ringgold Elementary

IMG_20160705_112054

The word is that the big pretty tree in front of Ringgold Elementary in Benton was hit by lightning a while back and has died as a result. Tuesday morning, July 5th, 2016, workers began removing the tree from the property. We're sad to see it go. Hopefully, there are plans for more shade trees in the near future.

Update: The photos from the tree service's Facebook page show this tree was hollowed out and definitely dead before they cut it down. …

The "Roger Special" was a surprise at this locally-owned restaurant in Benton

Located in what was once Denny's on Highway 5 and the I30 service road in Benton, the Icehouse Grill is well worth an effort to satisfy your culinary curiosity. We had breakfast. I had a breakfast platter known in my family as the "Roger Special." Contents: 2 eggs scrambled, country sausage, hashbrowns, whole wheat toast, and gravy on the side. Thelma had her own special which was a sandwich made of bacon, a hard fried egg, and cheese on Texas toast. She had a helpin' of sliced pickles on…

Questioning the mayor’s selection committee

Questioning the mayor’s selection committee

Saline Courier - March 13, 2016

Dear Editor:

We commend the mayor for setting the selection of a new CFO for the city in motion. It definitely is time for the city to start getting its accounting procedures back to normal. However, it does seem quite strange that in all this process, we do not hear any mention of the city treasurer.

In 2009, the city council set forth Ordinance 17 of 2007 which established an appointed… Continue

Benton Business Calls It Quits; Is Selling Off Inventory

I hate to see them go and so will fans of this business on Military Road that allowed locals to explore their creativity and learn new ways to build on it. Imaginations Created has been in business since late 2014, offering different types of classes like cooking, pottery, painting, woodworking and more.

The owners have said it's a tough decision but one that had to be made. They are currently seeking off inventory of ceramics and other things to paint and decorate. You can… Continue

New BBQ restaurant

The Flying Pig. I was sad when Sifted Flour closed, very sad. But there's a BBQ place open there now, apparently only week days lunch right now.  Has anyone been?

Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church loses front lawn

This tiny church is losing its lawn up to the handicap ramp at the front if you can believe the red flag markers in front that the surveyors left a couple of weeks ago. I was told that they have gotten permission to enter land behind the church from the west by the gas station and will stay in that area…

So many questions about this couple from the billboard at Alcoa and I-30!

I just saw this LED billboard sign at Alcoa Road and Interstate 30 where someone is proposing marriage to someone named Macy.
Since the proposal is public, the public wants to know the details!
Who is Macy?
Who is proposing?
Did Macy see the sign?
Did Macy say yes?
Everybody wants to know!

UPDATE: We have the answer from Macy herself!

Coyote Wandering Through Neighborhood Near City Park in Benton

One resident near Tyndall Park in Benton says he and a neighbor have noticed a coyote in their back yards two days in a row. The resident, who wished to be anonymous for privacy, lives on North 4th Street, two blocks from the park. He says his neighbor told him Saturday there was a coyote in their yard. Then on Sunday, he himself saw one - maybe the same one - in his own yard. The following are photos that he got of the animal in his own yard.…
