FEMA issues warning to City of Alexander

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has sent an advisory notice to the residents of Alexander warning them that inaction by the City Council will result in, “Suspension from the National Flood Insurance Program.”

Benton PD Arrests Suspect in Recent Jewelry Heist

EricaStell1 On 7/1/15, at approximately 12:16 PM, officers with the Benton Police Department took a report of a residential burglary and theft in the 1800 block of Leawood Drive.  It was reported to officers that neighbors witnessed somebody break into the home, but they were gone prior to their arrival.

Head-on Collision on the Interstate in Bryant Blamed on Wrong-Way Driver

There was an accident in Bryant last night, with a driver headed the wrong direction on Interstate 30. I happened to hear about this one because my friend, Martie Savage saw it all and got out to help since she is a nurse.

"[He] was driving the wrong way down the Interstate and hit a truck head on at the 123 Bryant exit. I stopped because no EMS was there yet and assisted. No air bag deployed and he crushed the steering wheel."

Four Alexander aldermen kill FEMA flood insurance ordinance

Anyone who has flood insurance for property in the City of Alexander won’t have it after Monday (July 6) and anyone wanting a policy will be turned down after what happened during a special council meeting. Four aldermen successfully stopped an ordinance establishing an updated flood map of the city, a requirement to maintain the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) flood prevention program.

Driver Identified and Charged in Teen Pedestrian Fatality in Benton

UPDATE 11:36AM 07/02/15

Caleb Collins, 26, of Benton, the driver of the vehicle is incarcerated at the Saline County Jail.  He is charged with •leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving injury or death.  He was also issued a violator citation for •driving with a suspended driver license.

Benton Mayor Mattingly Gives Raises and Lowers Taxes, Shows Off New Facility & Mascot

City of Benton Mayor David Mattingly held a press conference this morning to make a couple of announcements that will come as good news to City employees, as well as local residents. 

Mattingly announced that employees will be receiving a cost of living allowance (COLA) raise of 3.5%, and he also wants to lower property taxes for Benton residents - from 4.9% to 4.1%.
