Last night at the Public Works Committee Meeting, Chairman Tom Lish appointed myself, Justin Meeks, and Barbara Howell to a sub-committee to work towards a solution for the ongoing animal control problem facing our county. I am very aware that this serious problem has been the subject of many heated conversations in the past. I would like to hear your ideas on this and guys PLEASE don't turn this into a personal platform. This is a problem that we all have to deal with. I am feeding a stray…

We had our Quorum Court meeting tonight. The entry level salaries were unanimously approved for the Circuit Court for five positions. Also on our agenda was an interlocal agreement between Alexander and Bauxite for a court clerk. After hearing from the Mayor and a member of the city council we decided to table the issue until an agreement could be worked out. Today I heard from several residents from Bauxite on this issue (44 to be exact!) and greatly appreciate your input and respect your…

Hey guys and gals! Just wanted to say I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve this great county and you the citizens who make it great! While I am sure that we will sometimes disagree on various subjects, I believe we all have one thing in common - we want what is best for Saline County! I am open to any suggestions all of you may have and will willingly answer any question that I can. I believe that transparency in politics is imperative and will always make myself available to you,…

Saturday, myself and many other local elected officials were sworn in to our offices. I would like to thank all my supporters, volunteers, and the voters who made this special day a reality! Judge Phillipps was there to swear us in and unknown to me Judge Phillipps refused to shake the hand of Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan. He also refused to swear Clerk Milligan in and thankfully our gracious County Judge did so. Wether or not His Honor likes certain individuals, he was sworn in to do a job…
ContinueHi, Larry, I'm back in the saddle again. My mother has recovered beautifully from quintuple (5) heart bypass surgery (no heart attacks or strokes, just warning pain) and is coming home tomorrow. I've heard about the progress with salaries for Dennis' office and I'm glad this abrasive chapter is coming to a close. Of course, the tribalists will NOT be happy all the same because "their girls" are still not going to be there, and I doubt if bygones will completely be bygones.
They aren't likely to be happy with his apparent success, since pleasing THEM was a priority with them, NOT his success in the office he holds. As he continues to do well, it will be harder and harder to criticize him for anything other than firing their friends, so the political implications of all of this are yet to be seen.
Let's hope we can hold on to you on Quorum and send a few others home the next go-around who will work with you and the others better. I see a lot of positive change on its way to Saline County, and I'm just glad you're in the game. Stick to your guns, podner! I'm sure you'll do well in the months to come.
One concern I want to express to you is about the recent developments between the City of Benton and the Lake Norrell Homeowners Association. Keep an eye out, but the city has concocted some scheme to extort "fees" out of the lake's property owners that go further toward setting draconian "standards" for boat docks that are ridiculous and unnecessary. Also, thanks to information uncovered by my own mother, prior to her illness, the city is likely overstepping its bounds even though it actually owns the lake in the center of what is otherwise private property, exceeding their mileage limit of city authority by a good 2 or more miles. Please keep an eye on this!
Larry, after reading your brave posting on the deplorable conduct of Judge Phillips, I'm happy to confirm you as a friend. If you have followed some of my lively comments on here referring to the "tribe" in Saline County politics, I'm immediately convinced that you are a man who gets it. Dennis was very grateful to Lanny Fite for stepping up and showing the decorum that was lacking in Judge Phillips, and said so very publicly. We need more guys lke you speaking out on this kind of abuse. The tribe simply cannot accept that someone outside of their group won an election, and that this newly elected man might want to exclude their friends and do things his way.
As you probably know, the Handbook for Arkansas Municipal Officials specifically and explicitly states that men like Milligan have every right to do exactly as he has done. That right is not being given any respect. As a matter of fact, some posters on here have even openly suggested that Milligan should have bowed before the judges themselves and asked their blessings before making any changes to a staff that they were accustomed to.
I'm not making this up! I would invite you to check the Milligan blog that I have fired up so hot and browse the thread for that specific remark, I believe, by Gina H. Reynolds. It boggles the mind that the oligarchy of Saline County politics runs so deep that to even challenge an incumbent is viewed largely as an attack. We have to change this.
Thanks for making a positive contribution to the dialogue.
