Thelma, I allowed myself to be drafted into a war I disagreed with. While everyone (including you I feel sure) were ranting about draft dodgers and how it was THE LAW.
Now it is your turn to OBEY THE LAW.
The original post was cut from the IRS.gov web site.
The observation is that everyone wants everyone ELSE to obey the LAW until it becomes a little inconvinient or costly to THEMSELVES and then it is a totally different story full of excuses about record keeping or whatever.

- I've got it Thelma. Notify me when you make a trade and I will keep the records for you in trade for other 'goods or services' that you are willing to trade. Of course we will have to keep records on those transactions which I will have to have more goods and services for. NOW!! I'm begining to sound like the IRS now aren't I??

- The IRS no longer gives me credits for donations I make without check receipts. My word in record keeping is not good enough for them in that direction, why should it be good enough for them in the other direction? I bet the gives far outweigh the gets in our case anyway.

- Call it bartering if you want to be responsible for reporting it. If I don't keep good records, who is going to keep them for me? Helping people out and giving people stuff that you have no use for is just neighborly where I was raised.

From the IRS:
If you engage in barter transactions you may have tax responsibilities. You may be subject to liabilities for income tax, self-employment tax, employment tax, or excise tax. Your barter activities may result in ordinary business income, capital gains or capital losses, or you may have a nondeductible personal loss.
Barter dollars or trade dollars are identical to real dollars for tax reporting. If you conduct any direct barter - barter for another’s products or services - you will have to report the fair market value of the products or services you received on your tax return.
(This is why i turn off to bartering. Not that it isn't good 'business' just that whatever benefit you receive requires 'quantifying' and taxing).

- Offer: i also have access to fresh vegetables and extraordinary daylillys (grown here in benton) that you could trade for some manual labor... like weeding and mowing. its my parents place and they often need help keeping up. the busy season for them is fast approaching! :)
