It has been a long time since alcohol was served in any non-membership business in Saline County. Even longer since it was purchased in a store. Only in the last year has a Benton restaurant finally obtained the right to serve alcohol through a club/membership program. I wonder how much business has traveled to one county border or another to purchase libations, leaving profit and tax dollars in neighboring counties. I wonder how many of the members here have an interest in putting those dollars to work for Saline County. There's a poll at the bottom of this post, but it's just for entertainment value.

I'm asking residents of Saline County who are for making Saline a wet county - that is, able to serve and sell alcohol without a membership program - to contact the Quorum Court and let them know you want it on the ballot. Write a simple email or letter and make it short and to the point so there won't need to be a lot of reading. Give them your name and address at the bottom of the correspondence so they know you are a Saline resident.

February 18th is the next Quorum Court meeting.

You can contact the Quorum Court
through email
or by using the info below.

Sidenote: It's a lot easier to get big chain restaurants like the Olive Garden to come to town when they can serve alcohol.

cold beer is good.... driving 30 minutes round trip to get it is bad.... giving to our county instead of Pulaski with every purchase is even better. I'm in!

Put me down as another Officer in favor of a wet county. I don't understand the arguments against it. If you think that not being wet in any way shape or form makes Saline Co. safer or less drunk your wrong.

It does not take an expert to look at the revenue being driven to the other side of the county line.

Good luck with this though, especially in Benton which has a history of being anti-business.

A friend of mine did this research in January. I can come up with where it came from later, but wanted to throw it out there.

Little Rock and Pulaski County Sheriff's offices combined had
804 DWI arrests in 2005 with a 2000 population base of 361,474
that's an arrest rate of .0002 % for DWI.

Bryant, Benton and Saline sheriff's offices combined had
359 DWI arrests in 2005 with a 2000 population of 83,529
that's DOUBLE the arrest rate of .0004%

These numbers suggest that people are driving even farther while intoxicated to get home. Saline's dry status is producing twice the amount of DWI arrests.

I'm sending out emails to everyone in a minute - sorry the site was down for a bit earlier today.

The basics: Meet tomorrow night (Friday 6/20) at 7pm at Cliff's house in Miller Cove. Anybody who has posts here with interest will get details soon in your regular email.

Shelli, if the amount of DWI arrests goes down, then that will make less work for the attorneys meaning attorneys will not be able to make as much money. That hurts. Just kidding of course; despite efforts to reduce crime there seems to be enough criminal activity to keep everyone in the criminal justice system fairly busy.

That was good for a big laugh in the car while Chauffer Jim was taking me to work!
