According to an anonymous phone call I received tonight, former Benton police officer, Kirk Lane, has been named the new Benton Police Chief.

I've been told Holland is to make the announcement tomorrow. Many may recall that Holland intended to hire Lane when he was first elected but it caused such a "stink" that he was unable to do it then. It didn't pass the smell test then and I am hoping it won't pass the smell test now. Many thought I was crazy when I went public with information about Dan Harmon and Jay Campbell and Kirk Lane. I was right about Harmon, I was right about Campbell and I am right about Lane. Lane is the last person we need as chief of police of Benton.
For those of us who do not know the history, what's the deal with Kirk Lane? I moved to Benton just as the Harmon saga was playing out ('95) and my hubby has read "The Boys on the Track" so I know of some of the shenanigans of the past elected officials, but fill me in on this controversy.
Know this man well. I cannot say for sure what his involvement was one way or the other..but with just the history of accusations..probably wasn't a good decision for either the city or Kirk. We do live in a small town...
Perhaps Holland, seeing the end of his tenure, decided to go ahead and put him in.
Here's the story on THV
Lane is to be sworn in at 10:00 a.m Monday morning. Holland, as usual, puts his own agenda ahead of what is best for Benton. Lane is the 5th chief of police he has hired during his tenure, and with Lane he is finally getting his yes man. The well publicized public official corruption so rampant in the 80's and 90's put Saline County on the national map. This appointment makes Saline county the laughing-stock of law enforcement. If anyone thinks the feds cleaned up the corruption in Saline County when Harmon was arrested and convicted, they are sadly mistaken. Look what Lonoke got after they hired Jay Campbell as their chief of police. History repeats itself.
I can't imagine what it's like to lose a child...hope I never do...I don't agree with this decision..but what can we do?
Hey Sheila -- that # does include the interim chiefs -- Holland actually 1st took office in Jan 2003 and he "strong-armed" Watters into "resigning" that same month. Holland intended to hire Kirk Lane at that time but a public outcry forced him to back down and Chambers, who was serving as Holland's "transition coordinator" was appointed Chief of Police. In June of 2003 Holland attempted to create a position for Lane and bring him in as "assistant chief of police" which also did not fly. Bottom line is, Holland has been trying to cram Kirk Lane down our throats for years and seems to have finally succeeded. If citizens out there don't like the appointment they should call the mayor and city council members to express their feelings -- and if a city council meeting is held they should show up!
Linda,

My heart goes out to you hun. I seen the clip on TV for the Lane appointment & the only thing I could think about was the boys, the corruption he was a BIG part of and the dreaded feeling of "Oh GREAT, Here we go AGAIN" . Is Hollad building his Army from with in or what? Makes one really effin' wonder what Saline County Law Enforcment & Officials are up to this time?????????? I cant wait to hear what John Brown's thoughts are on this. I am writing him today. I may have a house & land for sale in Saline County ;) LOL Any buyers????

If you find the Mayor's choice of the new police chief insane and somewhat foul smelling, call all the aldermen and the mayor's office and voice your displeasure. Also have all your fellow citizens do the same. Even though I live in the county, I find it insulting that Mr. Lane is being shoved down your throats given his "history". And City Hall wonders why we do not want to be annexed into Benton?
Sounds like a plan Wes!!! Good God Hollad may HATE me after the new year starts. LOL
In my book, being a Holland enemy is a badge of honor.

Just an observation, but I would think it's best not for an anonymous poster such as yourself to call on others to do what you will not do. But maybe that's just me.
