The governor issued a proclamation honoring Helm. Beebe called Helm "an enormously talented performer and gifted musician whose Arkansas roots can be heard and felt in his voice and in his music."

The night they drove old Dixie down
And the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down
And the people were singing

I will blow a kiss to Levon as I ride through Marvell tomorrow.

Excellent. Respectful and very in touch with what Arkansas is feeling.

My condolences to the Helm family.

Yet....

Here we go honoring another dead drug abuser. Shame on Mr. Beebe. What one chooses to "honor" in their life can expose one's priorities.

God forbid we honor a fallen soldier.

Go ahead...pile on, now. It really doesn't matter to me.

We know Junior, we know...Trying to make a point with you is about as worthless as your opinions...

Discusting and disrespectful to those who served in the military, americore, the peace core and other ways

of service to our country or those in need. Levon did none of this. He was a good musician but did nothing for the state or country to deserve a Flags at Half Staff day.

Shouldn't be flown for him. I loved his music but that doesn't dictate the need  for this. He will live on in his music for lifetimes and will be honored by those who remember him but this is not the way.

I bet a lot of Vietnam vets listened to the Band. Probably got them through some really tough times. Lowering the flag for Levon Helm is fine and has nothing to do with lowering the flag for our fallen servicemen. Which should be done also!.

Don't suffer in silence, Burt. Mental impotence can be cured.

I have mixed feelings about lowering our flag for entertainers.  It is an honor to have the flag at half mask and I would hate to see that turn into an every other day happening, which could happen.  We just keep lowering our standards for what use to be a special honor.  Are we taking the "special honor" out of it?

For those of the opinion that a half-mast flag isn't for musicians:

I think the order was for just the Arkansas flag to be at half. Military personnel aren't the only ones who make up our great state. This isn't lowering our standards or comparing an entertainer to anyone alive or past in the military. This is simply a man from Arkansas who worked to put us on the map in his own way and touched many lives in doing so.

He was a great talent and many in Arkansas and far beyond have mourned his loss and will continue to do so. It's your right to feel disrespected as a veteran if you must, but for the Arkansas Governor that made the decision to honor this other type of Arkansas hero with the one unifying way we have to do so, I stand by him.

Having said that, I wish you wouldn't feel disrespected. I wish for you to feel honored, and well enough that the attention bestowed one very talented soul from common soil doesn't change how you carry yourself.

He was a good musician, but other than that......Did he serve in the Military? I don't think I agree with the flags at half staff. Very questionable.

Hero?

Really? Drug abusing rock stars are heroes in today's world?

hero, noun, 1. a man of great courage, nobility, etc., or someone admired for his exploits

exploit, noun, 1. a daring act; bold deed; verb, 1. to make use of; to utilize, 2. to make unethical use of for one's own profit

While I can agree that Mr. Helm and all other cancer patients must have courage and boldness to deal with such a dreadful disease, I cannot agree with a "hero" status placed upon him for his exploitation of his talents.

Priorities matter in the end.

If it was for just the Arkansas Flag I don't have a problem with that. But to fly the National flag is different.
