Well it looks like we have some very smart people on this site who can help us poor, ill-informed computer users (Shelli - note that I inserted the p ;-) ). My son brought his new laptop in to me last night and said that he had received notification to download a Windows update and since he has the laptop will boot up but the screen is blank. I tried using safeboot and when I do I can see the files loading but when Windows comes up the screen is blank.

Any thoughts or ideas?

hmmm...You did not mention what OS was installed on his laptop. Is it XP or Vista? Also most of the time when I see this happen something has changed in the video card drivers (maybe due to the update). Some vendors do include a set of reinstall CDs for situations like this. Considering that the laptop is brand new you might consider performing this procedure to try and get the laptop back to a factory state first to ensure that there are not any hardware issues for which he would need to return or exchange the laptop.

It is Vista OS. So if I understand correctly, you are suggesting to use the recovery cd that came with the unit, is that correct?

Yes, you are correct. Try to get it back to a factory state first. This way you can make sure that it does not have any hardware issues.

Thank you, sir.

I hope that before you ran a recovery disk to put the laptop back to its original factory state, that you backed up any personal files or work that may have been important (such as essays or research papers, etc.).

Then again, if by "new" you mean your son hasn't had time to do much with it yet, there may not be much, if anything, to back up.

I know most folks nowadays use thumbdrives or other external storage to save important schoolwork on, but I thought it might be worth mentioning, nonetheless.

Thanks for the tip. We haven't done a full restore yet. I tried to do a system restore but there had not been a previous version saved yet so no go there.

If I wanted to try to get some professional help locally, any suggestions?

I guess you could try these guys. I've seen their office in the shopping center on Hwy 5 with Casa Mexicana. They seem legit, and you'd be supporting a local business.

Their site is a bit cheesy, but I imagine their strength lies in hardware and OS config, not web publishing.

I've never worked with them nor heard anything about them (but then, I'm still kinda new here), but they appear professional.

I thought of them as well. Thanks for the insight.

Too bad you don't have a linux live cd lying around somewhere. That's another easy way to check and make sure you don't have a simple hardware problem. The entire operating system is on a single cd, so you don't have to mess with anything on your harddrive. You just pop the cd in and reboot. If you get a nice, colorful desktop (albeit slightly different from a typical windows desktop), your hardware is fine and you have either a driver issue or a corrupt system file. If you like, I could bring one to Hastings or something so we could pop it in for a try.

Thanks for the offer. I think I have one of the technical guys at my work lined up to take a look at it for me. If that fails we may go with your idea. Thanks again.

Cool! I just know it's gonna be something Windows-related-- which is a LOT cheaper than having to replace hardware!

Good luck-- I know how frustrating it is!
